Happy International Women’s Day!
Celebrating the 2017 #BeBoldForChange theme with these statistics:
- More than 9.4 million US firms are owned by women, employing nearly 7.9 million people, and generating $1.5 trillion in sales as of 2015, according to the 2015 Womenable report commissioned by American Express “OPEN State of Women-Owned Businesses.”
- Yet, the share of US women-owned firms with $1 million or more in revenues or 50 or more employees remains very small. Also, the 2012 report from The National Women’s Business Council identified that women-owned businesses employ only 8% of the US workforce and earn only 4% of US revenue—and these numbers have not significantly changed since 2002.
- In other words, the sheer number of women-owned firms in the US is rising, but their earnings and growth are not.
- Groups like the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO National) work to close this earning and growth gap by empowering women business owners with mentoring, professional development, education about financing, and more.
So this International Women’s Day, we salute all women, and extend heartfelt appreciation for all who advocate for women business owners and for woman-owned businesses like ours!
